Murugan is the Tamil war god. A commander — the one who broke Sūr, the one who has stood over the Tamil land since the first lines Tamils ever wrote about their gods.

Murugan is a war god. Not only the beautiful youth. Not only the lover of Valli. A commander — the one who broke Sūr, the one who has stood over the Tamil land since the first lines Tamils ever wrote about their gods. And a commander does not ride alone. The mayil goes first. Higher, faster, further — the pathfinder, the eye that finds the enemy while the enemy is still far. It does not carry him. It finds the war for him. The elephant carries him in. Grey, scarred, unhurried, immense. And the name he gave that elephant was Annan. Elder brother. Elder comrade. The word a soldier gives the older man beside him — the one who went in first, who knows the ground, whose judgment you trust before your own. The Vel is his. The ground beneath him is the Tamil land No one protects a land alone.
