Tamil is taught in Mauritian primary and secondary schools as an optional language, and many kovils and community associations run weekend classes for children and adults.

The written language uses 12 vowels and 18 consonants, combined into syllables. Most learners begin with the vowels, then read simple words aloud before touching grammar.
